Are you a fan of dogs, but also at work and away from home a lot? The ideal solution for you is independent dogs. For what reason? Few dog breeds tolerate isolation better than most. Those are exactly the breeds that we would like to show here.  The dog breeds here are so interesting that you’ll definitely get excited about them.   Let’s take a peek at the list of the top 10 dog breeds that can be left at home alone:

1. Chow Chow

The Chow Chow, an irreplaceable little dog, is a proud, popular and, above all, independent pet. Only great owners excel in getting these dogs to be good and loyal pets.  Why? Chow Chows can be stubborn, guarded, independent, faithful, and silent. Isolation suits them just fine. They are shy, silent, arrogant, and they don’t want anybody to listen. Their independence often suggests that they never get nervous. Chow Chows can remain at home alone and won’t need any company. They don’t shed too much either, they drool very little, and they don’t have a big need for physical exercise. Though Chow Chows like to be on their own, they shouldn’t always be left alone.

Why? By design, they are almost too independent, and for them to become good dogs, their owner has to be dedicated to them.   Some breeds of dogs get really close to their owners and want regular companionship. These dogs can be nervous, aggressive, unsatisfied, depressed without enough care. Independent dogs do not need you to pay too much attention to them, which for certain owners is exactly what makes them perfect.  For what kind of owners? For owners who travel a lot and do not have much time for their dog, are searching for breeds who do not need too much maintenance, often leave home for long hours, independent dogs are excellent. You should remember, however, that dogs are animals that live in packs. Your company is needed even with the most independent dogs. If you don’t want to devote yourself to your dog, you’re better off not having one. Independent dogs are only an ideal solution for you if you are busy with jobs, always go on trips, or are simply unable to be with your pet.

2. Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature Schnauzers are recognized for their fantastic personality that beats their physical size.  Owners enjoy them, and they still belong to the most common breeds of dogs.

Why is this? Miniature Schnauzers seem to be: Friendly, articulate, brave, obedient, smart, and attentive.  Owners enjoy their ability to be the main focus of attention, and with their enthusiasm and mischief, Schnauzers can entertain the entire family. They are rather independent dogs, though. Miniature Schnauzers can deal with isolation, adjust very well to apartment life or smaller rooms, don’t shed too much, don’t drool, and don’t have a particular barking habit. Both of these attributes help them land on the list’s very high second place. And now for the world’s most independent house dogs.

3. Otterhound

Otterhounds originated in England and are a dog breed which is critically endangered. These dogs are wonderful pets, and people are working to to improve their population levels. Otterhounds can be temperamental, social, gentle, playful, and a bit noisy.   They don’t like living in apartments and in tiny rooms. They enjoy living in a house with a wide yard, though. They don’t have any concerns with being left on their own. However, they will discover different ways of amusing themselves, including digging and destroying plants, if you neglect them for long periods.

4. Basenji

The Basenji is the world’s oldest dog breed. They used to be hunters in the past.

Today, their main qualities for house and apartment living make them an attractive pet option. What attributes? Basenjis are smart, curious, lively, playful, friendly, and attentive. The features stated previously do not clarify why they are particularly great for living in houses and apartments. The truth is that they don’t shed, they don’t bark, they don’t stink, and they just need basic grooming. Sounds great, huh? They are also highly independent dogs and deal well with isolation. Yet, if you let them out, make sure that your yard is fenced in, so that they don’t get away.

5. Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is a small dog breed from Japan that is renowned for its fiery temperament. They are primarily pets now. Shiba Inus are: confident, brave, beautiful, attentive, loyal, sharp. Shiba Inus are great at dealing with solitude. They’re perfect for beginners and can transition easily to living in a house or apartment. Their only drawbacks are their tendency to be rather unfriendly to outsiders and their marked hunting instinct. They like to bark a lot as well, and they need physical exercise.

6. Lhasa Apso

In the past, the small Lhasa Apsos used to be personal guard dogs. Today, they are outstanding family pets, but in a special manner, they are also independent. Lhasa Apsos are polite, peaceful, attentive, obedient, faithful, wise, courageous.

While they are accustomed to barking due to their protectiveness, they are still peaceful little dogs. They do not drool or shed a lot and quickly adapt to smaller spaces like homes. They are both independent and have little trouble living on their own in the house for long periods.

7. Chinese Shar-Pei

A highly independent dog, the Chinese Shar-Pei prefers to think for itself and do whatever it wants. They are referred to by owners all around the world as the least favored family dogs. For what reason? Shar-Pei Chinese dogs are careful, quiet, devoted, independent, defensive. They can tolerate isolation well due to their maturity, and you can leave them on their own for extended periods.

You must, though, be a great owner of them from an early age. They are an exceptionally demanding dog breed that requires an assertive owner to bond with them as their leader and tolerate them.

8. English Bulldog

A breed known for its lack of activity, stubbornness, and being lazy is the English Bulldog. Sleeping on the bed or sofa all day would not raise a concern for them. English Bulldogs are stubborn, friendly, polite, and sociable. They’re not too noisy, in addition to being inactive. They won’t shed too much hair with a few brushings every week, and they adjust easily to both urban and rural life. All these qualities make them perfect independent dogs.

9. Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier is a lovely, gentle and, above all, kind breed who loves to please its owners. That is exactly why they earned a nickname for their “American Gentleman”.  The Boston Terriers are smart, polite, colorful, gentle.

They are quiet little dogs who shed little and deal very well with isolation. For first-time owners, for both home and condo living, they’re outstanding puppies, and they can be perfect companions for both children and retirees. They do, however, need daily physical exercise, so you have to provide ample physical stimulus for them.

10. Basset Hound

Basset Hounds get along with children, other breeds, and people. There are a few other characteristics other than their friendliness that make them perfect for being left at home alone.  What traits? Basset Hounds are friendly, stubborn, playful, loyal, persistent, compassionate towards everyone.

The predominant traits of these dogs are their stubbornness and laziness. It’s better for them to manage being on their own because of this. Still, for shorter stretches, they tolerate isolation well. They can become disruptive if they remain at home for a longer period of time, such as the whole day.

The dog breeds mentioned also exhibit different characteristics. Each dog breed is distinctive and has some features that could suit you better or not at all. The breeds listed are clearly the best based on their characteristics of independence. The remainder is up to you.
